[Tactics] Fun with… Logan Grimnar

image

The Space Wolves codex allows for some pretty over the top units and combinations.  Here are some fun combos to try, featuring the King of the Space Wolves Logan Grimnar, and his bearded retinues. This hairy old bloke is tons of points, but looks really fun to play with.  Remember that you do not need to use the official model to field Logan, your own custom terminator character will work just fine.

Ridiculous Tank Exploders

With the “High King” rule, Logan can give Long Fangs either Relentless or Tank Hunters during your turn. Move and shoot heavy weapons? Yes please.  Strength 10 lascannons? Yes indeed. He can also grant Fearless during your opponent’s turns, if you think you won’t be assaulted, or Preferred Enemy if close combat is headed your way. Stelek from YTTH fields Logan with 5 lascannon wielding Long Fangs which is great, but below is something far crazier. I thought it would be fun to make the ultimate tank hunting unit, taken to the point of absurdity.

  -  Logan Grimnar (275)
  -  5 Long Fangs with multimeltas, Squad Leader with meltagun and powerfist (250)
  -  Wolf Guard terminator with chainfist, combi-melta and cyclone launcher (83)
  -  They ride in a Land Raider variant, with a multi-melta and extra armor (275)
  Total points: 883!

With relentless the unit can disembark and fire at unsuspecting hard targets after a 12” land raider move. You have just given your multi-meltas an effective 38” range, or 26” range for getting the extra armor penetration die. The unit can follow it up with an assault if in range, and since the Long Fangs can split fire with their squad leader alive you should be able to assault what you want to. You’ll get 11 powerfist / chainfist attacks on the charge, plus some krak grenades or strength 4 ceramite boots from the old guys. If you want you can trigger “Living Legend” at any time for extra attacks. Unless you have extremely bad rolling this should pop any vehicle, even a land raider or monolith (although the extra dice from melta or the chainfist will not help against a monolith). You can also split fire and nuke other kinds of units, inflicting instant death against anything with toughness 4 or less. This unit is a silly amount of points but I thought it would be fun to try sometime. You can always tone it down by dropping some wargear or the terminator, or just fielding them as a more vulnerable foot unit.

Drop Pod Madness!

If you are looking for something deadly but not horribly expensive, you could run up to 10 Wolf Guard with combi-meltas in a drop pod. Logan would be a possible addition for this unit but not totally necessary, but he will make them scoring (he does take up two transport slots though).  Throw in some special weapons to taste, such as a chainfist on a terminator, a powerfist or two, frost blades, etc. Wolf Guard are the most customizable unit in the game. If you want to be extra silly you can give individual Wolf Guard models bikes or jump packs in a unit on foot. To be most effective you will probably want to limit your special weapon models to about half the squad, with the exception of cheaper upgrades like combi-weapons. You will need some ablative wounds for when you take casualties.

When using a drop pod be careful that you do not isolate one squad and leave it unsupported.  The opponent’s army can focus fire into your stranded unit if they are not placed with LOS blocking cover in mind. If you want your drop pod to land on target take advantage of the Inertial Guidance System, try to land it in a dense area with units and terrain all around it, you want a nice little hole if possible. Try to minimize the chance you will end up more than 6” away from your target vehicle, otherwise save most of your combi-melta shots. Although you can’t assault the turn you drop, you have countercharge and lots of attacks so you will still do pretty well if assaulted.

One trick you can do is to drop empty pods, so you can have more choice about when units arrive. If you want all your drop pod units to come down turn one, just make sure you have an equal number of units with pods that will set up on the board, then just drop the empty pods later to block movement, LOS, and hopefully confuse the enemy.

Killer Unit

You could also run Wolf guard out of a Land Raider variant, they can pop any tank with up to 10 combi-melta shots and then assault the occupants. Arguably they are better than Blood Claws for a killer assault unit since they get 2 attacks no matter what and not just on the charge. The have slightly better leadership, but the main reason they excel over bloodclaws is their cheaper weapon upgrades and plethora of choices. You can have one expensive fist or power weapon on a Blood Claw or as many cheaper ones as you want. They also do not suffer from headstrong. All that is easily worth the extra 3 points, the only problem is that they are not scoring units… but you can fix that with the pricey but fun Mr. Grimnar.

Sneaky Scoring Ninjas

Here’s yet another trick to use with Logan Grimnar and Wolf Guard: Buy two units of 3 Wolf Guard each, for a total of 6 models. 4 of them will go to lead Grey Hunters or Blood Claws squads, and up to two can take mark of the wulfen if you want. The other two get bikes, one from each squad, and now you have two individual SCORING bike models (53 points apiece). These will suck a little in killpoints games, but in objective games you can stick them in reserve and then turboboost around to claim objectives in the late game. If they come out of reserve too early, find them a spot somewhere on the board where they can hide out of line of sight. Since you will have your entire half of the board to hide them, you should be able to find a safe spot or two.

Have fun creating your own combos! Feel free to post your own experiences or ideas below.
